چکیده

We discuss effects of the different chemical bondings on the island morphology and on the island density scaling in two-component submonolayer growth. Different regimes depending on the strength of the mutual interactions and on the relative mobility of species are described and studied by kinetic Monte Carlo simulations using a two-component solidon-solid growth model. Results for the temperature and flux dependence of the island density as well as examples of the surface morphologies are presented.

Nucleation and submonolayer growth of C60 on KBr.

Noncontact atomic force microscopy has been applied to the prototypical molecule-insulator system C60 on KBr to study nucleation and submonolayer growth. Overview images reveal an island growth mode with unusual branching structures. Simultaneous molecular and atomic resolution on the C60 and KBr surfaces, respectively, was obtained revealing a coincident 8x3 superstructure. Also, a 21+/-3 pm a...

Multilayer thin film growth on crystalline and quasicrystalline surfaces: A phase-field crystal study

In this paper, we explore the effects of misfit strain fields on both heterogeneous nucleation behavior and anisotropic growth of islands at submonolayer coverages and compositional patterning at complete monolayer coverage via simulations of a phase-field crystal model. In particular, deposition on top of a herringbone structure and quasicrystalline (QC) substrate are considered, the former re...

Dynamic scaling of the submonolayer island size distribution during self-assembled monolayer growth

In situ atomic force microscope observations of the formation of octadecylphosphonic acid monolayers, deposited from solution onto mica, indicate that growth proceeds via the nucleation, growth, and coalescence of densely packed submonolayer islands of adsorbate molecules. Three regimes are observed: ~1! an initial growth regime where nucleation of new islands is significant, ~2! an aggregation...

Molecular-resolution imaging of pentacene on KCl(001)

The growth of pentacene on KCl(001) at submonolayer coverage was studied by dynamic scanning force microscopy. At coverages below one monolayer pentacene was found to arrange in islands with an upright configuration. The molecular arrangement was resolved in high-resolution images. In these images two different types of patterns were observed, which switch repeatedly. In addition, defects were ...

Submonolayer sensitivity of InSb on InP determined by friction-force microscopy

Using molecular-beam-epitaxy-grown InAs and InSb on InP~001! surfaces, we show that the friction-force microscope is sensitive to monolayer coverage. Those surfaces are characterized by three-dimensional islands separated by flat regions. For a constant load, the frictional forces measured on the InAs island and on the substrate are the same. This is due to the formation of a two-dimensional we...
